Synopsis
Kujiratori tells the story of school children pretending they are building a boat. As imagination replaces reality, they find themselves on the ocean, hunting for a whale. A big, gentle whale appears, accompanies them back to land and plays with them. Then the fantasy ends and the children are back in their class room.

this might be the best depiction of the power and wonder of children’s imagination that i’ve ever seen in film! couldn’t help but cry watching it i was just so happy :)

viewed without english subtitles so i didn't quite grasp the nuances of dialogue, but the broad thematic strokes seem very in line with miyazaki's usual, albeit in a much more child-oriented and generally mild package. i'd interpret it as a tale about the mutual benefit that unity with nature brings, but it exudes charm as well, making for a very pleasant encapsulation of childhood imagination and creativity alongside the environmental themes. i do wish these shorts were made available outside of the ghibli museum, but the opportunity to watch this in non-camrip form is undeniably special.

Had the pleasure of visiting the Mitaka Ghibli Museum today and got to see this short on the big screen!
I dunno what these kids were saying, but I can’t lie I was misty eyed the whole time. I love how Miyazaki constantly pushes viewers to question the fluidity of reality itself by telling magical stories through the eyes of a child. I think that creative statement is the most influential thing for me as someone who dreams of making films one day.
Gonna try to see How Do You Live? on Friday! :)

[Seen at the Ghibli Museum, wooh!]
So I have this silly completionist goal of finishing every animated film/short from Ghibli. But because they have so many, many of them difficult to find, and many of them barely related to the studio and its staff, I have devised my own cheaty criteria of what counts and doesn't count:
-All films (Features and TV)
-Everything in Miyazaki's filmography
-All Ghibli Museum shorts (+ Imaginary Flying Machines)There are 9 shorts out so far. I found shoddy versions of Kittenbus, Egg Princess, and Water Spider online and saw Whale Hunt here. They cycle through their shorts monthly as far as I know so there was no way I could've caught more screenings by…

Forgot to log this but I was at the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka earlier this month, and caught this as part of their rotating shorts program. So lovely to watch, especially with groups of families. There’s so much charm in the way Miyazaki animates movement, and he really gets mannerisms of children, like to a T. Still fascinated and really want to dig deeper into this man’s obsession with machines, it permeates through everything he does. Beautiful, beautiful stuff.
