In a bold move, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has stood his ground against criticism from former England captain Wayne Rooney regarding his rotation strategy. This comes after Rooney questioned Maresca's team selections, particularly after the 2-2 draw against Qarabag in the Champions League, where Maresca made seven changes to his starting lineup.
Maresca, however, remains unshaken, emphasizing the strength of his squad and the need for rotation to keep players fit throughout a grueling season that began with Chelsea's triumph in the Club World Cup.
"In today's football landscape, opinions are freely shared, and I respect that," Maresca stated, addressing Rooney's comments. "Since I've been at Chelsea, my approach has been clear: rotate the players. When you win, no one complains; when you don't, I understand the disagreement."
He further explained his philosophy, citing the increased physical demands of modern football. "It's simply not feasible to play the same players in 65 games across a season. If we view the season as a marathon, by February and March, the final sprint, we must adapt our thinking."
Maresca also defended his decision to play teenage defender Jorrel Hato in Baku, despite his involvement in both Qarabag goals. "When the rotation involves players of the caliber of Andrey Santos, a Brazilian international, Jorrel Hato, a Dutch international, and Estevao, another Brazilian international, it's not just about rotation. These are talented, young players, and we must allow them the space to learn from their mistakes."
Chelsea fully supports Maresca's rotation policy, viewing it as a strategic move to maximize player availability over the course of a long season. The club has built a deep squad specifically for this purpose, with the strategy endorsed by the sporting directors and management.
"We're aware of the potential for up to 65 games this season, post-Club World Cup victory," they stated. "Rotation has proven beneficial, as seen with Reece James, who has struggled with injuries. We believe that giving minutes to new players, despite the initial adaptation period, will pay dividends in the long run."
